Objective

Primary goal is To enhance the resilience of 5 villages Godkhali, Mokamberia, Ramgopalpur,Kamardanga inluding Ramkrinapur village in Basanti island of Sundarbans District 24 parganas south against frequent flooding by establishing a well planned mangrove plantation along coastline of 5 villages. The geographic coordinates for these villages are 22.1562N and 88.7638E. Total no of household are 2274 families catering to polulation of 10,020.

The grown up plants shall serve resting and nesting ground for birds and animals in long run and prevent frequent flooding and loss of lives & property.

1 : To plant 2.5 lakh Mangrove plantation of diverse range of species along vulnerable coastline of 5 village considering their ecological adaptability , growth rates and benefitting in reducing wave energy , erosion and storm surge impact.

2. Community assessment to identify local need , existing knowledge , livelihood options that can generate extra income . Involving the community to develop a sense of ownership of project.

3. Sustainability : development of long term management plan for the mangrove plantation including regular monitoring by local women, maintainence and capacity building of the community to sustain the project beyond its initial implementation phase by selling mangrove waste produce, using training to grow mangrove prapagules and secure banks of other villages.

Pilot project done so far with help of Young India and Kishlay foundation.

Plantation of 1 lakh saplings along coast of Ramkrishnapur village during September/October 2023 about 2 years ago.Around 70% of saplings have survived.

Establishing a tailoring skill centre to teach women alternate livelihood.

Establishing a health clinic in village to take care of local population's health.

Study of topography by expert agency from Kalyani university& identified location.

Project implementation steps

1. Study of topography by club members & expert. (Done)

2. Identify suitable area for plantation through site visit & ecological consultation .(Done)

3. Consultation with experts like Dr Neera sarkar DPR .

4. Prepare soil by Self help group by laying Geotextile along bank to prevent erosion & seedling cultivation

5. Plantation of mangrove saplings after procurement

According to plan by expert by self help group under supervision of members .

6. Regular monitoring & evaluation of plants by field visit by club members & agency and google camera by agency & share result with Rotary foundation & partners

7. Training of local women on mangrove plantation nursery

8. Training them to learn sewing , making mats & other products out of grass or from sea weed which can be marketed by Rotary SLM & Yi

9. Training to grow marketable local organic red rice .

10 Train them in hospitality so that they can undertake tour of mangrove plantation for guest and offer them locally grown food & vegetable .

Timeline : 2-3 years 2025-2027

Project fund will be used for training the self help group of local women & men ,Procuring mangrove prapagules, Labour cost for plantation, Securing the village coast through fencing by Biotextile impregnated with algae and moss and held together by wooden poles , Monitoring and evaluation by external agency and public awareness including project management & contingency .

Club members shall be writing the grant ,apply to foundation and follow up with grant officials till approval. Open bank account to recieve grant funds and implement the grant in phased manner.Vist to site monthly or as need basis.Collection of reports and compilation. They will coordinate with local government , NGO and International partners.Publicise the project in community and rotary world to mke people aware of importance of Mangroves in lives of coastal inhabitants.

Measuring Success: Protecting and Restoring Mangroves through satellite images and Direct obsevation

: supporting Agroecolgy, fishing measured by questainnaire and survey

: strengthning the resilence of community measured by behaviour change.
