WATER SANITATION AND HYGIENE PROJECT- KILONITO LOCATION -KAJIADO KENYA

1: Kilonito location is part of the wider KajiadoCounty in Kenya. The entire Location is inhabited by the Masai nomadic community who are purely pastoralist.

The area suffers from extended harsh weather conditions, with women being key family bearers toil about tending to their families without having access to sufficient suitable water. For years, the Massai communities have taken cattle herding as their main economic activities in this part of the country. With minimal access to water supply these activities are fairly diminishing and as such causing terrible environmental problems as the headers have to move out of their ancestral locations to search for water and grazing fields in other locations leaving their families in distress.

The county governments of Kajiado, in consideration of trying to alleviate the water problem, did install two water bore holes to serve the communities in the vulnerable these villages of Paranai and Indupa which has a total population of about 1800 people.

These boreholes run on generators hence fuel is needed, and it has not been easy in terms of sustainability. Communities cannot afford the costs of diesel and at the same time attendance to intermittent maintenance needs remain wanting.

Whilst in each of these areas there is a community team leader that takes care of the equipment and collects a small fee for those who come to fetch water and use of cattle troughs for animals the monies collected are not sufficient to sustain the running of the systems.

We have since engaged the water specialists who are our District Rotary partners M/S Davis and Shurtliff Limited. The company has carried out surveys to ascertain the possibility of having the boreholes run on the solar system:

The Project Proposal is to rehabilitate the two boreholes and install secure solar systems for pumping water: This will go along-way in easing access to water by the communities in this area.

2: BOYS RESCUE SECONDARY SCHOOL - GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOLS & ECDE SCHOOL

There is within proximity a boy's rescue Secondary school- which was built by donors to cater and take in boychild who are forced into child labor at an early age, i.e. sand harvesting and herding thus missing out on school. Its School is run Church mission.

We propose to install rainwater harvesting system with 5000-liter elevated water tank.

The Oloiborsoit Girls Secondary school in the same area has a population of 300 pupils with only 3no. pit latrines. We are proposing to build 5-hole pit latrines to keep the girls comfortable

The newly built ECDE school in Paranai -Osupuko village, has only one pit latrine being shared by both teachers and pupils quite a hygiene problem, we propose a 3-hole pit latrine too and supply and install Rainwater harvesting system including one water tank of 5000 liters.

OVERAL OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT:

Improved Public Health

Reduce Waterborne Diseases: Ensuring access to clean water helps decrease the incidence of waterborne diseases.

Improve Hygiene: Access to clean water will encourage better hygiene practices

Boost small scale Agricultural Productivity: Reliable access to water will enable activities, particularly for household small gardens growing vegetables.

Support Livelihoods: Access to water is essential for various livelihoods

Equal Access for All: Improve equitable access to clean water in this marginalized rural communities, reducing disparities in access between urban and rural populations.

Gender Equality: Women and girls are often the primary water collectors in this region. Improving access to water reduces the time and labor spent collecting water, allowing for more educational and economic opportunities for the girl child.

Environmental Sustainability

Conserve Natural Water Resources: Solarization will ensure sustainable water management prevent use of fuel.

Reduce Pollution: Access to clean water systems can also be paired with wastewater management systems to prevent contamination of water sources, maintaining the health of ecosystems.

Improving Quality of Life

Increase Availability of Clean Drinking Water: Ensuring pupils have consistent access to safe, potable water for daily use.

Access to Water for Basic Needs: Water is required for cooking, cleaning, and personal hygiene, and improving access can lead to better living conditions.

AT THE SCHOOL WATER HARVESTING SYSTEMS & TOILETS

Increase Water Storage and Management Systems and Safe waste disposal: Building infrastructure to capture and store water, Waste disposal will mitigate possible semblance to diseases.

Adaptation to Water Scarcity: Implementing water-efficient technologies will help School communities adapt to the changing climate.

Reduction in Waterborne Diseases: Access to clean water will significantly reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases.

Lower Mortality and Morbidity: The prevention of waterborne diseases leads to fewer deaths and illnesses, especially among vulnerable populations like children and the elderly.

SPECIFIC PROJECT OUTCOMES

Improved Hygiene and Sanitation

Increased Productivity: When clean water is readily available, fewer people are sick and more time can be dedicated to work, whether in agriculture, business, or other sectors.

Cost Savings: The provision of clean water reduces the financial burden on families and communities who might otherwise need to spend on medical treatment for waterborne diseases or buy water from expensive sources.

Healthier populations with fewer waterborne diseases

Improved living conditions with safe drinking water and better sanitation

Empowered communities, particularly women and girls, with more time for education and economic activities

Environmental sustainability through responsible water uses and waste management

Resilient, self-sustaining communities capable of managing their water resources

Reduced absentees at school better performance.

Project team of seven Rotarians from Rotary Club of Karengata will be involved as resource personnel under the leadership of the Project Director. Club membership at different stages will be allowed to visit ongoing project and assist in monitoring with our partners a local Community based Organization.
