Kamurasi Demonstration Primary School with a population of 1,398 pupils has a dilapidated classroom block that requires rehabilitation. They also lack toilets segregated amongst girls and boys. They lack water within the school compound. The project will rehabilitate an office block, erect toilet facilities segregated by sex, to enable girls separately handle their menstrual hygiene in privacy, and avail clean potable water for use in cooking food and washing utensils. Rebuilding will take 3 months, user training one month and monitoring will take one year.
Objectives
1. Improve the learning environment by renovating the classroom block and supplying it with scholastic materials (desks and chairs)
2. Improve the water, sanitation and hygiene conditions of the school by erecting toilet facilities segregated by gender.
Planned activities:
1. Renovate the dilapidated classroom block
2. Erect a pit latrine to be used by the girls and female teachers
3. Procure 300 desks to augment the existing desks
4. Build a rainwater harvesting system into an underground 50K litre water tank to store the collected water.
5. Pump water using solar pumps from the underground tank to an overhead 10K litre tank supported on a steel tank stand.
6. Supply water (by gravity) to water use facilities (e.g. taps and hand wash basins)
