To do Water Harvesting, Hand-washing Stations, Toilet Renovations, Ablution Block in each school. A solar powered water borehole with water kiosk to serve the schools and the surrounding community The thorough needs assessment conducted established that the schools lack adequate clean water. They depend on rain water with insufficient storage facilities. In instances of prolonged dry seasons, the school completely lacks water. The storage tanks are also not hygienically situated and this leads to disastrous situations during outbreaks of waterborne diseases. These diseases have ravaged the entire school and extended to homes and the local community, severely interfering with the learning and development processes of the children. Secondly, the schools lack proper sanitary facilities. The pit latrines are filled and in dilapidated conditions, with visible maggots on the floors. It is for this reason that the schools requires urgent funding to set up a clean water and sanitation system

Community Needs, Project Impact and Sustainability

Community Assessment

The thorough needs assessment conducted established that the schools lack adequate clean water. They depend on rain water with insufficient storage facilities. In instances of prolonged dry seasons, the school completely lacks water. The storage tanks are also not hygienically situated and this leads to disastrous situations during outbreaks of waterborne diseases. These diseases have ravaged the entire school and extended to homes and the local community, severely interfering with the learning and development processes of the children. Compounding this issue are similar conditions at their homes and in the local community, where water is sometimes completely unavailable. The lack of clean water and inadequate medical facilities nearby exacerbates the situation, making disease outbreaks especially disastrous. Secondly, the schools lack proper sanitary facilities. The pit latrines are filled and in dilapidated conditions, with visible maggots on the floors.

★ Impact on the Community: Health and Hygiene Improvement: The project will directly benefit 8,500 students by enhancing their health, hygiene, and overall quality of life. By providing clean water and proper sanitation, the project will significantly reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases and improve attendance and performance in school. ★ Broader Community Impact: The health benefits will extend to over 20,000 individuals in the surrounding communities, as clean water and improved sanitation facilities reduce the spread of diseases. Improved health outcomes will reduce medical costs and increase productivity within the community. ★ Educational Support: Improved sanitation and hygiene will create a healthier learning environment, leading to better academic outcomes and overall child development. ★ Community Engagement and Education: The project will educate community members about the importance of clean water and sanitation, fostering a culture of health and hygiene

Sustainability

★ Community Involvement: Active participation of community members in the maintenance and operation of the water and sanitation systems. This includes forming local committees to oversee the infrastructure. The solar operated system would ensure low sustainable operation costs ★ Income Generation: Generating income through water vending to support ongoing operational costs. This model not only ensures sustainability but also provides economic opportunities for the community. ★ Maintenance Fund: Establishing a maintenance fund, supported by community contributions and income from water vending, to cover future repair and maintenance costs. ★ Training and Education: Conduct regular training sessions for students and community members on hygiene practices and the importance of maintaining the water and sanitation facilities. ★ Monitoring and Evaluation: Implementing a robust monitoring and evaluation framework to track the project's progress, impact, and sustainability.
