Project Title:"Healthy Futures: Cervical Cancer Awareness, Screening, and Prevention for Women in Lamjung"
Background and Problem Statement:
Cervical cancer remains a significant health challenge for women in Nepal, particularly in rural areas like Lamjung. According to national statistics, cervical cancer accounts for 17% of cancer cases among women in Nepal. Many women lack access to regular health check-ups, awareness about preventive measures, and vaccinations. Stigma, misinformation, and limited healthcare facilities exacerbate the issue, leading to late-stage diagnoses and higher mortality rates.
In Lamjung District, approximately 5,000 women, particularly from marginalized communities, are at high risk of cervical cancer. These women often lack knowledge about the importance of early screening and vaccination, as well as access to services.
Project Objectives:
Provide cervical cancer awareness to 5,000 women in Lamjung.
Conduct free cervical cancer screenings (Pap smear tests) for 5,000 women.
Administer HPV vaccinations to eligible women and girls to prevent cervical cancer.
Build capacity among healthcare providers to offer sustainable screening and vaccination services.
Reduce stigma and promote early detection and prevention through community engagement.
Proposed Activities:
1. Awareness Campaigns:
Community Sessions: Organize 50 awareness programs targeting women and their families, focusing on cervical cancer prevention, symptoms, and the importance of early detection.
Information Materials: Distribute brochures, posters, and digital content in local languages to reach a wider audience.
Radio Programs: Broadcast educational messages on local radio stations to dispel myths and encourage participation in screenings and vaccinations.
2. Screening Programs:
Conduct free Pap smear tests at community health centers and mobile health camps.
Ensure that trained female health workers perform screenings to create a comfortable environment for participants.
Refer women with abnormal results for follow-up diagnosis and treatment.
3. HPV Vaccination:
Administer HPV vaccines to 2,000 eligible girls and women aged 9-26 years.
Collaborate with local health posts and schools for vaccination drives.
4. Capacity Building:
Train 50 healthcare providers on cervical cancer screening, vaccination, and counseling.
Provide training manuals and tools to sustain services beyond the project duration.
5. Monitoring and Evaluation:
Establish a monitoring committee comprising Rotary members, healthcare workers, and local government representatives.
Conduct regular site visits and feedback sessions to assess project implementation.
Evaluate project impact through surveys and reports.
