Brief History
Anchor-Age Center(aka Anchorage Senior Activity Center) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation. Anchor-Age Center was incorporated effective August 31, 1981, with the State of Alaska. The corporation's Alaska entity number is: 24902D and our SIC is 8640. The facility is 35,000 square feet and sits on 5 acres of Municipal land that is adjacent to the Chester Creek Trail. Anchorage Senior Activity Center opened its doors in June of 1983 and has served our elder and senior community for nearly 40 years.
Services Provided
Anchor-Age Center's(dba Anchorage Senior Activity Center) purpose is to improve living conditions for seniors. They strive to be a "place for everyone". To advance that purpose Anchor-Age Center operates the Municipality of Anchorage's Senior Center by providing seniors with access to services and information key to senior living, health, and housing.
The Anchorage Senior Activity Center(ASAC) further serves its members and the community by having a full-time Medicare Information Office and the only Benefit Enrollment Center in the State(which allows members and the community to be screened for multiple benefits and includes Medicaid enrollment). The Center also provides meals and access to a nutritionist who provides education and counseling.
Members enjoy other benefits such as fitness classes(both group and one on one instruction are available), crafts(Zen art and quilting), arts(i.e. writing and painting), and computers(access and instruction). ASAC launched a community tablet lending program and also has mental health-focused classes such as "Enlightened Living" and AgeSmart.
Project
To complement the ASAC's current flower gardens, the organization is developing a multi-generational community garden. This garden will consist of primarily raised beds with about 10-15% of the garden being at ground level. The raised beds will allow for all ages to have comfortable access to gardening. The Center looks forward to their seniors having the opportunity to work in the garden, socially interact with others, learn new skills, and use their existing skills to teach others. Through existing partnerships with Anchorage School District, Fairview Community Center, Kiwanis, Anchorage Park Foundation, and many others, this community garden will bring children and adults together with their elders as they work toward a common goal and learn from each other. The 10-15% of the community garden that will not be raised beds are the areas directly inside the perimeter fence that will be used for growing vegetables like peas, beans, sunflowers, corn, etc.
The Anchorage Senior Activity Center would love to partner with Anchorage South Rotary toward this goal through ASR's fundraising efforts and a matching Rotary District 5010 Grant. These funds would allow for this community garden goal to become a reality. ASAC looks forward to introducing Anchorage South Rotary (and other district Rotarians) to their talented staff, volunteers, and community members as they work toward completing this community garden.
There is an overlapping project with Anchorage's 1% for Art, a matching grant from the Anchorage Parks Foundation, as well as individual donors that will allow for a cohesive flow between the existing flower gardens, signage, sculptures, and the new Chester Creek Trail Community Garden that abuts the existing Chester Creek Trail. This overlapping project has a projected completion date of October 2023.
