The Yonkers Rotary Club is pleased to partner with the City of Yonkers to construct the first, public, sensory garden in Yonkers.
The garden will be constructed in Grant Park, a public park serving the residents of the St Joseph's and Glenwood neighborhoods of the city.
The Park is also adjacent to, and used by, The Westchester School and the San Souci Nursing and Rehabilitation Center
The Westchester School is a year-round, NYS approved special education day facility that serves individuals with autism and multiple handicaps as well as children who are medically fragile.
The San Souci Nursing and Rehabilitation Center provides orthopedic rehabilitation, wound care and veterans' services on a short term and subacute basis to its residents.
The sensory gardens will include flowers, shrubs, herbs and other landscape features.
Neighborhood residents, students from The Westchester School and the residents from San Souci will be encouraged to touch, smell, taste, and generally interact with the garden.
The garden will be designed with public input during the fall and winter, built in the spring and completed by May 30, 2022.
Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)
This project consists only of the installation of the sensory graden; it is not part of a larger rehabilitation of Grant Park
The Yonkers Rotary Club is partnering with the City of Yonkers to install the sensory garden because the garden will be installed in a City park that will benefit the neighborhood (appx 8,000 residents), the students at The Westchester School (appx 200) and the residents of the San Souci Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (appx 120)
