Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: South Africa

Location: Grahamstown

Total Budget: $124,937

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene

The project is reestablish the use of up to seven ablution blocks (toilets, lavatories, interior cabinets, plumbing), a scullery, and wastewater management (collection and removalby pumping to the municipal sewer (above the school). The sanitation facilities need to serve up to 900 learners and 90 teachers and staff. Currently the municipal water supply is unreliable, water storage is not connected to the ablution blocks, and wastewater floods an open air area near the school. The school must close when there is no water. Disease transmission is likely from the unsanitary ablution blocks and the standing wastewater.

Initial budget is USD $133,358 for entire project. Phasing of the project to achieve partial operational status is ongoing as of this date (October 15, 2019). Up to twenty international partners are identified and expected to contribute once the phasing is established.

This project has been organized into three phases as of Oct 22, 2019. Current fund raising is for $60,000 which will cover the reconstruction of three ablution (toilet) blocks to include toilets, lavatories (sinks), plumping, sewage disposal, and water supply.

The grant request to D5440 is pending decision.

This project received excellent financial support so project expanded to the full scope of all seven ablution blocks as well as a scullery to was dishes. The budget was also expanded to $130,000.Current funding would allow budget of $124636.
