Down Syndrome Socialization

$25,982

Building self-esteem, socialization and public acceptance of people with Down syndrome.

“The Theatre of Open-hearted” was created in 1999 by theater and cinema actor Igor Neupokoev. All actors are people with Down syndrome.

This theater provides a great opportunity for people with Down syndrome to share with us their feelings and soul, via performances. The stage is the unique place where these people can build self-confidence, esteem and meet with spectators as an equal. Great progress in their integration into society is accomplished by playing roles in the Theater of Open-hearted.

The theater has difficulties do to a lack of a stage. Renting of theaters is very expensive, making it almost impossible to conduct the performances. A solution to the problem has been found, give performances in memorial sites and historic halls. However, these facilities are not equipped for theatrical productions.

This project will give the “Theater” its own light and sound equipment enabling it to give performances in museums, churches and other places. This supports our main idea - Socialize disabled people by means of the theater.

The mobile equipment will also make it possible for the “Theater” to give performances in towns across Russia, providing greater socialization and giving an example of how to integrate these special people into society.

The purchase of the equipment will be completed within 60 days of receiving funding. However, the use and benefit of the equipment and the involvement of the Rotary Club of Moscow-East will continue for years to come. With proper equipment, the theater will be able to become self-supporting, however the need for Rotarian hands on involvement will continue.

Rotary Club "Moscow-East" has been actively involved with this theater for more than 2 years.
