Scholarship (See Below for Scholar Profile Questions)

Describe the process your team used to select this candidate.

Laramie Rotary Club worked with the University of Wyoming International Programs scholars office to identify potential applicants. Two applicants were interviewed in person initially and invited to draft a preliminary application. Summer Coleman was selected from the process by a small committee of Rotarians.

How did this candidate's background, studies, and future plans qualify them for a global grant under this area of focus?

Summer Holeman has been an honors student at the community college and University of Wyoming. She seeks to support a greater sense of agency and human connection through health. She intends to meet this goal through her PhD research in evaluating the effectiveness of community-based interventions as a high-leverage system for preventive healthcare. Summer's qualifications to receive this scholarship are byproducts of a sense of agency and ambitions to create large-scale change, converging within her personal, professional, and academic development.

Summer Holeman's career in behavioral research began when she studied tropical birds in Panama. However, subsequent to that experience she designed her own research after experiencing the transformative impact of community-based fitness as an exchange student in the UK. Summer conducted a study on the UK interventions now forming her doctoral research. She has since presented this study in Oxford and for the University of Edinburgh.

Complementing these experiences as a community fitness coach by the application of her research. Summer has obtained certification in Iceland and in Scotland, utilizing these certifications to volunteer for health charities and work in community gyms. In this position she has witnessed the complex challenges to positive health behavior and the powerful influence of human connection on health. Summer will expand on these experiences and serve greater health and quality of life with support from this scholarship.
