the main objective is to contribute to the fight against the Chagas disease, with Bolivia being the country in the world with the highest incidence, Rotary has a great opportunity to make a difference.. Congenital Chagas transmitted from mother to child during pregnancy can be eliminated if treated during first 12 months of baby. The challenge is to detect them. The project specific objetives are: 1. to detect a greater number of babies with congenital chagas and their siblings aged 2 to 12 years old, 2. to strengthen the bio lab of the Women's hospital to expand coverage of PCR test application and 3. to create public awareness and mobilize the community (health providers but also mothers) about the opportunity to treat children.

the project has a duration of 12 months, and will be carried out in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, capital of municipality of the Santa Cruz departament. 4 out of 20 health centers affiliated to the Chagas Departmental Program will be selected during year 1 of the project. Pregnant women come to their pre natal controls at these centers and chagas diagnostic is performed as a routine control. this is an opportunity that the project is capitalizing. and the idea is that mothers be requested to bring their other children to their next control. so they can also be diagnosed and treated if Chagas positive. 1 y 5 women giving birth in Santa Cruz city, are mothers with Chagas. They may transmit it to their babies in more than one pregnancy.

the regional government through SEDES and Programa departamental de control de Chagas are the entities in charge of public health and the Chagas disease in the department of Santa Cruz. The Women-s hospital and its partner Johns Hopkins University are the principal actors in the project.. the project is based on the capabilities of the bio molecular lab and professional staff..ready to go beyond the incidence study to actually become the reference institution of Congenital Chagas testing in Santa Cruz capital city initially but surely will expand services to the rest of municipalities in the department.

the project was our initiative, we drafted project documents with active participation of the local health authorites, we conducted a needs assesment and project design and interventions consultation with all stakeholders.. and we plan to participate actively in project implementation. However, Rotary members will certainly be pivotal in replication and expansion of the project to other areas of the country where the Chagas disease is also a serious problem

Describe the role that international Rotarians will have in this project.

we came into contact with Argentinian clubs working on a regional Chagas program.. and we have been in close contact with them and shared our project with them all along.... the idea is the ours is part of an eventual regional project including Paraguay, Argentina and Bolivia and why not Brasil.. our 4 countries account for close to 70% of all Chagas afected peopled.
