Project Description Region: Africa Country: Cameroon Location: Menfoung Total Budget: $49,915 Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene This international Global Grant-funded project will provide clean and reliable water, latrines and hand-washing stations, disease prevention, Menstrual Hygiene Workshops as well as Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Training for 1,000 community members including 600 school children in the village of Menfoung Mbororo III, Cameroon. The Rotary Club of Denver Southeast is teaming with several District 5450 and outside clubs, a local host Kumbo Rotary Club and local Cooperating Organizations to undertake this much-needed project. The local Rotary Club (the Rotary Club of Kumbo) and the local Cooperating Organizations (the Association for Sustainable Development, ASD and the Catholic Engineering Corps (CEC)) have a history of successfully completing sustainable community-driven projects in Cameroon. The first objective of the project is to create a water supply which includes drilling a well for water, an electric-powered pump system for the well, and storage facilities designed to distribute the water to the school and community. The second objective is to construct model latrines and hand-washing stations for the local school. Thirdly, a Water System and WASH training for the local water committee and villagers to improve water-related disease awareness and education, sustainable menstrual hygiene management, financial and circuit rider education. This initiative merges water provision and knowledge with public health to provide sustainable, community-led WASH awareness and action in rural Cameroon that provides year-round health and productivity services. The project is proposed to be concluded in 12 months or less. Club members are overseeing the budget, timeline and technical aspects of the project, including visiting for key progress points.
