The project will provide potable water to within two or three kilometers of most of the approximately 46,000 inhabitants of the area. This will meet need 1. defined in the answer to Question 4.
A partnership of Americans and Kenyans has done survey each of the eight villages to determine the particular approach to be taken. Some of the approaches are
1. New boreholes (3)
2. Reliable power for water pumping (5)
3. New or repaired distribution pipelines
4. New or repaired water storage tanks (4)
In one village, separate boys' and girls' latrine cubicles will be provided at least 100 feet from water sources with convenient hand washing facilities. This will address need 2. of Question 4.
The beneficiaries are the 15,000 to 20,000 [?] inhabitants of the area. The benefits include better health, better education, better economic opportunity, and better quality of life.
The project will contract for technical, management and other services with MEDEC and E.A. Drillcom, Ltd., a Kenyan water well drilling company. The village projects will be prioritized and organized for efficiency of execution. MEDEC will organize villagers to provide labor (sweat equity) for unskilled labor requirements such as digging holes, mixing cement, digging trenches, hauling pipe line, etc. The implementation will occur over approximately one year. Project work will be based out of Kiserian, Kenya. Rotarians from Nairobi East will monitor and support project implementation with periodic visits by D5080 and D5340 Rotarians to Kenya.

Since receiving funding, project rotarians have worked with local Maasai community members and cooperative organizations to implement planned project activities. Three planned boreholes have been completed. Only the Leshuta one borehole produces adequate water. An alternative approach involving new pipelines from a distant well will bring water to Enkusero Sampu where the borehole produced no water. Other improvements including solar panels, water storage tanks, pipelines and new draw stations have been completed in different villages. Training for new village water committees was conducted by cooperative organization MEDEC. There still remains some water improvement activities to complete along with the training of women to grow vegetable gardens in the Garden in a Bucket Program.
