Shree Panchkanya Secondary School is a community school serving approximately 272 students, the majority of whom are girls. The school currently has only two toilets, and the urination facilities for both boys and girls are broken and unusable. The existing sanitation infrastructure is inadequate for the size of the student population and does not meet basic standards for hygiene, privacy, dignity, or safety.
The shortage of toilets and lack of gender-friendly sanitation facilities significantly affect studentsâââšâ‚€Ã¢âžÂ¢ health and educational experience. Girls are disproportionately impacted, particularly during menstruation, due to the absence of private and hygienic facilities for menstrual hygiene management. Many female students face discomfort, embarrassment, stress, and absenteeism because they lack access to safe and dignified sanitation at school.
According to UNICEF, schools must provide safe sanitation facilities that support menstrual hygiene, privacy, handwashing, and dignity for girls. UNICEF also emphasizes that menstrual hygiene management in schools should include access to facilities, disposal systems, hygiene education, and social support. Similarly, WHO highlights that school sanitation facilities must be clean, functional, safe, and accessible to ensure a healthy learning environment for children.
This project seeks to improve the health, dignity, attendance, and educational participation of students especially girls through the construction and rehabilitation of gender-friendly sanitation facilities and hygiene infrastructure at Shree Panchkanya Secondary School.
A needs assessment conducted at Shree Panchkanya Secondary School identified critical gaps in sanitation infrastructure. The school, serving approximately 272 students (majority girls), currently has only two functional toilets and a small number of broken urination facilities for both boys and girls. These limited and damaged facilities are insufficient for the student population, leading to overcrowding, poor hygiene conditions, and unsafe sanitation practices.
The lack of adequate and functional toilets particularly affects female students, who face challenges related to privacy, dignity, and menstrual hygiene management. The broken urinals and insufficient toilet capacity contribute to health risks, reduced comfort, and potential absenteeism.
How the Project Will Meet the Needs
This project will address the identified sanitation gaps by constructing additional gender-segregated toilet facilities and rehabilitating existing broken toilets and urinals at Shree Panchkanya Secondary School. It will ensure adequate toilet-to-student ratio, improved privacy, and safe access for both boys and girls.
Special focus will be given to girls needs by including private, clean, and secure sanitation spaces with handwashing stations and menstrual hygiene facilities. The project will also install proper water supply, drainage, and waste management systems to ensure functionality and hygiene.
Through these improvements, the project will create a safe, dignified, and healthy school environment that supports regular attendance and improves learning outcomes, especially for female students.
Project Timeline (12 Months)
The project will be implemented over a 12-month period, assuming that the needs assessment has already been completed.
