Project Description

Region: Western Europe

Country: Netherlands

Location: Delft

Total Budget: $36,933

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Rotary IHE-Delft Scholarship in Water and Sanitation for Mrs. Umanga Pandit Chhetri from Nepal, a highly qualified young professional in the water sector in Nepal.

A worldwide water crisis is threatening our future. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that by 2025, over half (!) of the world's population will live in areas affected by permanent water scarcity. We have taken water for granted for a long time but realize that action needs to be taken now.

A highly effective way to improve water management on a sustainable basis is to educate the next generation of water leaders through the Rotary IHE Delft Scholarships for Water and Sanitation at the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, the largest and most well known international water education facility in the world. They are the ones who will make the difference. You can help them reach their potential!

First of all, our candidates need to academically qualify to join a MSc course at IHE Delft and demonstrate their motivation to develop themselves and contribute to their local commu- nity's water sector. In order to do so, they need to seek the support of a local Rotary Club and District, who will jointly submit the application with the student. Each year, we typically receive 50 to 70 well-supported applications of which we select some 12 to 14 for a scholarship. It may not come as a surprise that over 10% of the Rotary-sponsored students graduate with a distinction.

While studying in the Netherlands, the selected students are assigned to a Dutch Rotarian for local support and introduced to the broader Rotary organization, particularly its water- focused branch.

In the folder 'documents' of this website you will find the full description of the qualification and reasons to select Mrs. Chhetri from Nepal for the Scholarship/Global Grant.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
