Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: India

Location: Dharwad

Total Budget: $48,000

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

Rotary Club Of Dharwad Midtown (RCDMT) is running its Rotary Blood Center through Rotary Club Of Dharwad Midtown Charitable Trust. Blood Center is a vital service for the community, providing blood to patients in need. The club's 25 years of operation demonstrate its commitment to serving the people of Dharwad and surrounding areas. Rotary Blood Center was inaugurated in the year 2000, with its operations have served patients by supplying blood to the needy patients of Dharwad city, surrounding towns and other nearby villages. Currently our Blood Bank is having necessary equipment's like Blood collection monitor, Tube sealer, Blood Bank refrigerator, Plasma freezer, Double Pan weighing, Thawing Bath, Platelet agitator, Platelet incubator, Plasma Extractor, Refrigerated Centrifuge, Laminar air flow, Ph meter. Etc.

SCOPE

RCDMT has identified a significant scarcity of platelets in the health care system. Platelet transfusion is required for individuals who are actively bleeding or at high risk of bleeding due to low platelet counts or platelet dysfunction. This includes patients undergoing chemotherapy (Cancer patients) and bone marrow transplantation, major surgery, Dengue, Malaria or those with conditions like liver disease or severe trauma.

NEED ASSESSMENT

There are around 28 hospitals in Dharwad, Rotary Blood center not only provides blood to patients of Dharwad but also 3 hospitals in Savdatti, 2 hospitals in Kittur, 2 hospitals in Haliyal and 3 hospitals in Dandeli. Every month there is requirement of about more than 500 blood units but we are able to supply around 300 units of blood. Platelets requirement is also increasing along with other blood components.

Since Dharwad is educational hub, more than 10000 students migrate every year who are potential donors but we do not have Platelets extraction machine. Population of Dharwad and surrounding villages are dependent on Dharwad city health infrastructure which is increasing rapidly by many new medium and small-scale industries, many multispecialty hospitals are being built to cater to large number of working populations migrating to town.

The need for a Platelet extraction machine is clear, given the increasing demand for platelets and the limitations of the current setup. the impact of this machine would be significant.

Currently there are no SDP Machines in Dharwad city including Governement Hospital (Civil Hospital Dharwad)

SDM Hospital is having SDP Machine which is only for inhouse patients

Hubli city is having 4 machines.

1. Navanagar Cancer Hospital 2. Rashtrothhana Blood Center

2. Prema Bindu Blood Bank 4. KIMS Hubli

Entire Dharwad, Savdatti, Haliyal, Dandeli, Kittur hospitals rely on Hubli Blood banks

SERVICE

Rotary Blood Bank is providing Blood units to registered patients suffering with Thalassemia at free of cost on monthly basis.
