Project Description

Region: Eastern Europe

Country: Ukraine

Location: Cherkasy

Total Budget: $94,000

Area of Focus: Maternal and child health

1. Project Overview

The "Hope of Waves" project aims to establish a Children's Rehabilitation and Therapy Center in Cherkasy, Ukraine, to serve children aged 6-16 affected by war trauma and physical injuries.

This center will provide ongoing rehabilitation services-both physical and psychological-through modern therapy facilities, including a renovated rehabilitation pool, physiotherapy rooms, and sensory development areas.

The project will build upon the humanitarian aid initiative started by the partner Rotary Club in 2022, transforming it into a lasting Rotary landmark of care, recovery, and hope.

2. Community Needs

Since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, thousands of children have faced displacement, injury, and trauma. In Cherkasy region alone, local hospitals and NGOs have identified over 10,000 children requiring rehabilitation and psychological support.

Existing medical facilities are overburdened and lack the resources for long-term therapy. There is a pressing need for a dedicated, child-friendly space providing continuous rehabilitation and emotional recovery programs.

The "Hope of Waves" project directly addresses this need by creating a permanent Rotary-supported rehabilitation hub in partnership with the State Medical Hospital #5 and a local NGO.

3. Project Objectives

-To establish a fully functional rehabilitation center equipped for physical, hydro, and art therapy.

- To serve over 10,000 children annually through structured rehabilitation programs.

- To train local medical and therapy staff with international best practices and Rotary-led exchange programs.

- To promote long-term resilience and family reintegration for children affected by war trauma.

4. Measurable Outcomes

Infrastructure: Completion of building renovation and pool reconstruction within 3 months.

Equipment: Installation of rehabilitation and therapy equipment by month 6.

Services: Center operating at full capacity within 10 months, serving at least 800 children per month.

Training: 20 local staff trained by Rotary medical professionals or partner institutions.

Community Impact: Over 10,000 children and families supported in the first operational year.

5. Implementation Timeline

The project ensures sustainability through:

- Partnership with the State Medical Hospital of Cherkasy Ukraine, which will operate the center and provide certified staff.

- Ongoing Rotary oversight and visibility, ensuring transparency and accountability.

- Community ownership and volunteer participation, creating local engagement.

- Continuous maintenance funded by hospital operations and community contributions.

9. Public Image & Rotary Visibility

The Hope of Waves Center will prominently display the Rotary logo and names of both partner clubs.

Regular updates will be shared through Rotary newsletters, social media, and local press.

Annual Rotary Day events will be hosted at the center to highlight Rotary's role in rebuilding hope for children in Ukraine.

10. Monitoring and Evaluation

Progress will be tracked through quarterly reports detailing:

- Construction and equipment milestones

- Number of children treated and types of therapy provided

- Financial transparency updates

- Testimonials and success stories shared across partner districts

Summary

The "Hope of Waves" project embodies Rotary's core value of "Service Above Self", transforming compassion into tangible action. Amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, countless children continue to face physical and emotional trauma. By uniting international partnership, local expertise, and strong community commitment, this initiative provides critical support during the conflict and builds a lasting foundation for recovery in the postwar period. The "Hope of Waves" Center will help restore - hope, health, and happiness to thousands of Ukrainian children whose lives have been forever changed by war.
