Background and Justification
The war in Ukraine has left thousands of children traumatized by the loss of one or both parents, forced displacement, and exposure to ongoing stress and danger. Many of them face emotional withdrawal, anxiety, and limited access to structured psychological and recreational programs.
Rotary Club Kharkiv City proposes to implement two rehabilitation and recreation camps in the Carpathian region (Western Ukraine), focusing on two distinct groups from all regions of Ukraine:
1. Winter Camp (ages 10-16): for children of fallen Ukrainian defenders, combining mentorship, sports, and emotional recovery.
2. Summer Camp (ages 3-10): for mothers and their younger children, designed to strengthen emotional bonds, provide family therapy, and promote shared healing experiences.
Both camps aim to offer a safe, inclusive environment that promotes psychological recovery, social reintegration, and the rebuilding of trust and joy in everyday life.
Project Goal
To support the psychological recovery, social reintegration, and emotional well-being of children and families affected by war through structured rehabilitation, mentorship, and recreation programs that integrate sports, emotional intelligence training, and life skills development.
Objectives
• Provide psychological rehabilitation for children and parents/guardians through individual and group therapy sessions.
• Create safe recreational and family activities promoting emotional healing, resilience, and socialization.
• Support parents and guardians with counseling and practical tools to assist their children in recovery.
• Introduce mentorship and life skills programs focused on emotional intelligence, communication, teamwork, and leadership.
• Strengthen family bonds through joint therapeutic and recreational experiences that promote empathy, trust, and hope.
Target Groups
• Children from families of fallen Ukrainian defenders.
• Surviving parents or guardians (mostly mothers).
Scale of Intervention
The project will host two 10-day rehabilitation camps at a recreation facility in the Carpathian Mountains:
• Winter Camp: 75 children (ages 10-16).
• Summer Camp: 35 mothers and 35 children (ages 3-10).
Total participants: 145 (110 children + 35 adults).
Activities
Winter Camp - "Mentorship and Emotional Recovery through Sport"
• Psychological counseling: individual sessions with qualified psychologists addressing trauma and resilience.
• Group therapy: art therapy, play therapy, and storytelling to process grief and strengthen emotional stability.
• Sports and team activities: daily football and outdoor games to build confidence, discipline, and teamwork.
• Mentorship program: each child paired with a mentor (coach or youth leader) for guidance and personal growth.
• Life skills and emotional intelligence sessions: workshops on communication, self-awareness, empathy, conflict resolution, and leadership.
Summer Camp - "Healing Together: Mothers and Children"
• Family counseling: joint therapy sessions for mothers and children to rebuild trust and emotional connection.
• Group therapy for mothers: peer support circles and resilience workshops.
• Early development and recreation: safe games, creativity sessions, and outdoor activities for children ages 3-10.
• Parenting workshops: practical training on emotional regulation, communication, and post-trauma parenting strategies.
• Joint activities: art projects, sports games, and daily reflections to strengthen the family bond.
Expected Results
• At least 140 participants (children and parents) receive direct psychological, social, and mentorship support.
• Children improve coping skills, emotional stability, teamwork, and communication through sports and life skills training.
• Mothers/guardians gain emotional support, practical parenting skills, and renewed confidence to guide their children's recovery.
• Strengthened family connections and improved communication between parents and children.
• A replicable model of integrated rehabilitation and sports-based mentorship camps for future Rotary and partner initiatives across Ukraine.
