Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Kenya

Location: Juja

Total Budget: $31,400

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy

The current situation at Jacaranda Children's Home is dire and requires urgent attention. The majority of children lack proper uniforms and learning facilities, significantly affecting their motivation to learn and leading to poor academic performance. These inadequacies create long-lasting trauma that impacts the children's entire future lives. Additionally, medical facilities are unavailable or inadequate, and some of the children are HIV-positive and require intensive care, including proper diets and medication. These inadequacies interfere with the learning and development process and become extremely uncontrollable during outbreaks of contagious diseases. Furthermore, the ratio of caregivers/teachers to children is low, meaning the children do not receive the close attention required for their development. It is in consideration of these problems that the Rotary Club of Juja is appealing to donors and well-wishers to urgently step forward and provide the crucial support needed.

Community Needs

Community Assessment

The project will address the following critical community needs: • Education Support: Many families in the community struggle to afford education-related expenses, including school fees, learning materials, and uniforms. This financial burden impedes children's access to quality education and undermines their academic potential. The project's support will remove barriers to education and promote enrollment and attendance, ultimately ensuring access to quality primary education. • Healthcare Access: Children at Jacaranda Children's Home lack adequate healthcare support, including coverage for medical expenses. The support will assure access to healthcare services and promote their overall well-being and development, especially in combating prevalent diseases like HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other infectious diseases.

Project Impact

★ Improved Education and Health Outcomes: The project will directly benefit the children at Jacaranda Children's Home by providing them with the necessary educational and health support. ★ Enhanced Support for Vulnerable Children: The home's ability to support vulnerable children will be significantly enhanced, fostering a healthier and better-educated population. ★ Community Health Improvement: The project will contribute to community health improvement through efforts in combating diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria. ★ Better Academic Outcomes: Improved test scores and academic outcomes for students will result from reduced test anxiety and better mental health support. ★ Mental Health Awareness: Enhanced mental health and reduced stress levels will lead to increased awareness and utilization of mental health resources, benefiting the broader school community.

Sustainability

★ Contributions from local and international Rotary and Rotaract Clubs, including Rotaract Club of Youth Connect Kenya, Rotary Club Juja, and Rotary Club Dundas. ★ Additional funding through discussions with other clubs ★ Jacaranda Children's Home will contribute a percentage of the budget to cover continuous education and health expenses, ensuring continued support beyond the initial project period. Sustainability Plan: ★ Ongoing Support: Partner with school counselors and mental health professionals for ongoing support. ★ Program Integration: Integrate the program into the school's existing wellness initiatives. ★ Funding: Secure funding through educational grants and community sponsorships. ★ Community Involvement: Active participation from the community, including beneficiaries, in maintaining the project's outcomes. ★ Local Partnerships: Establish partnerships with local businesses and health providers to ensure ongoing support and resources. ★ Volunteer Programs

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
