ROTARY DIVERKIT: COGNITIVE STIMULATION FOR NEURODIVERGENT CHILDREN

Apanexda is a special education and comprehensive rehabilitation center that offers special education to children with cognitive disabilities and neurodevelopmental disorders: autism, Down syndrome and attention deficit. With the project, we will improve the educational service by strengthening and updating the academic training of teachers, equipping classrooms with technology, providing teaching materials (diverkits), adapting play areas, and installing air conditioners in classrooms and auditoriums.

These adaptations to the physical space, updating and providing technological equipment appropriate to the children's condition, and teacher training for the attention and spatial training of the beneficiaries, will enhance the capacities and development of skills of 45 neurodivergent students, based on training in new content and the implementation of new strategies that improve their learning while promoting cognitive stimulation ofchildren according to their needs.

In a survey applied to teachers, 90% believe that there is a need to equip classrooms with teaching tools (diverkits), computer equipment, televisions and musical instruments, a need for interactive games, an urgent need to improve facilities, including classrooms, play areas, toilets, and having more trained teaching staff; the above result coincides with the opinion of 100% of parents who were interviewed.

In response to these needs, the project will provide:

• 3 classrooms with neurokits.

• 1 computer room with 4 computers and 2 televisions.

• 1 music room with regional instruments.

• 1 classroom with 4 cognitive game equipment.

• 1 playground in the garden with 3 equipment for physical games.

• 8 pictograms for cognitive accessibility and 4 air conditioners.

With this, 45 children, 3 teachers, and 14 members of the administrative team will directly

benefit. In addition, an indirect impact is expected on approximately 120 family members, who will be able to observe the academic and personal connection of the students.

The Rotarian Family of Barranquilla (including the Rotary Club of Barranquilla, the Rotaract Club Barranquilla Caribe, Interact Marymount and the Rotary Ladies Association) is committed not only with providing resources to enhance these children educational process, but also to contribute and participate directly in the different activities, seminars, and trainings to support the teachers and families and grant the continuity and proper use and maintenance of the equipment and resources allocated.
