Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Colombia

Location: Cartagena

Total Budget: $155,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

PROBLEM & STORY: In Tierra Bomba, due to poverty, 450 children between the ages of 1 and 7 were left on the streets or alones on them houses, exposed to abuse, mistreatment, and malnutrition.

Awarded of this urgent need, the community built a childcare center on donated land to provide a safe space for the children while their fathers went fishing and their mothers sold goods on the beaches of Cartagena.

The children began receiving care and learning from other female community leaders on the island. However, these leaders lacked the necessary skills and educational materials to provide a good education and care.

In response to this need and recognizing the power of community empowerment, in 2024, we launched Caring Tierra Bomba Kids, supported by a Global Grant with the sponsoring of rotary Club of Cartagena and the Space Center of Houston.

During this phase we focused on training 20 community leaders, with the essential skills and tools to provide quality education and proper care.

The training was conducted by certified Montessori instructors, who applied the methodology in real-time while working with 207 children.

IMPACT:

The impact of this first phase was remarkable:

1. 207 children were no longer left on the streets,.

2. We achieved a 96% reduction in child malnutrition.

3. 88% retention rate .

4. 88% of children showed improvement in cognitive and emotional development.

5. 100% of first-grade children learned to read.

6. 20 community leaders began their training on certified educational methodologies.

7. More than 150 families received support and guidance.

THE STORY CONTINUE:

Despite the progress we've made, there is still so much more to do.

To create a lasting impact in Tierra Bomba, we must:

1. Empower local leaders

2. Transform our childcare center

3. Strengthen families

With this next phase, we will achieve:

* 20 women certified with formal education, empowering them as educators and community leaders.

* 300 children protected from abuse, mistreatment, and malnutrition, giving them a chance at a brighter future.

* 150+ families trained in positive parenting, fostering safer and healthier households.

* Quality education made possible through well-equipped learning spaces and resources.

The true impact goes beyond numbers. By completing this second phase, we will certify local leaders, equipping them with the skills and credentials needed to sustain and elevate the quality of education in Tierra Bomba.

This is not just an investment in the present-it is the key to ensuring a future where children receive the education they deserve, year after year, for generations to come.

The first phase concluded in December 2024. Now, we need you.

Will you be part of this transformation?
