Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Colombia

Location: Cúcuta

Total Budget: $129,653

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

To improve the quality of life of the Villa Sofia - La Concordia community by constructing an adequate sewerage network that meets their basic sanitation needs and reduces public health problems, such as the proliferation of dengue and digestive diseases caused by water contamination. The infrastructure will improve the hygienic conditions of the area, helping to prevent diseases and providing a healthier environment for its inhabitants. Measuring improvement: The improvement in the quality of life of the community will be measured through public health indicators, such as the decrease in vector-borne and gastrointestinal diseases, community satisfaction reports, and periodic evaluations on the reduction of sources of contamination and stagnant water.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The community of Villa Sofía - La Concordia, inhabited by diverse age groups and with criteria of vulnerability, lacks an adequate sewage system. Currently, the houses use artisanal drains that cause open discharges, generating bad odors and stagnant water that facilitate the spread of diseases such as dengue. This project aims to build a sewage system to improve the sanitary conditions of the sector, reduce health risks and improve the quality of life of approximately 350 people, including children, older adults, and vulnerable populations such as people with disabilities, single mothers and victims of the armed conflict. Once the project is completed, the service provider company Aguas Kpital will assume responsibility for the maintenance and replacement of the sewage system, ensuring its sustainability.

The community of Villa Sofía - La Concordia urgently needs a sewerage system to solve basic sanitation problems and reduce diseases caused by poor hygiene, such as dengue. Homes suffer from bad odors and are exposed to the proliferation of disease-transmitting insects. The construction of the sewerage system will eliminate sources of infection, significantly improving the health and environmental conditions of the area. The project will benefit 69 homes and about 350 people, including vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities, older adults, single mothers and victims of the armed conflict.

SUSTAINABILITY: Once the construction of the sewerage network is completed, responsibility for its maintenance and replacement will be transferred to the company Aguas Kpital, in charge of the water and sewerage services in the region. This company will be responsible for ensuring that the system works correctly and that the necessary interventions are carried out when faults or maintenance requirements are detected. The community, through the community action board, will have an active role in the supervision of the system, reporting any irregularities and ensuring the proper use of the infrastructure. The community is expected to maintain its active participation in the preservation of the system, collaborating with unskilled labor during its implementation and in the long term through surveillance committees. Community members will be trained to acquire the necessary skills as skilled labor in the repair and maintenance of the sewerage system. This will ensure the sustainability of the project and promote active participation in its care. Training will be provided by experts in basic sanitation.

The community of Villa Sofía - La Concordia has expressed its willingness to collaborate on the project by providing labor during the construction of the sewerage network. This will mainly be unskilled labor, which will reduce implementation costs and foster a sense of ownership towards the infrastructure. In the long term, the community action board will be in charge of supervising the proper functioning of the system and will coordinate with the company Aguas Kpital in case it needs maintenance or additional improvements. This community participation guarantees not only the successful implementation of the project, but also its sustainability in the future.
