Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Colombia

Location: Villa de Leyva

Total Budget: $39,500

Area of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

Contributing to the Construction of a Culture of Peace and Coexistence in Villa de Leyva Through the Implementation of a Bilingualism Program in Rural Schools

Our initiative aims to strengthen children's English skills to provide them with better future job opportunities and prevent their involvement in illicit activities. By promoting peace through education, we seek to create a safe and stable environment for future generations in the region.

Through a strategic partnership with an English institute composed of volunteers, we will ensure the daily presence of a native English teacher in participating rural schools through virtual classes. Our involvement in the project includes purchasing video beam projectors and the necessary equipment to deliver the lessons, coordinating transportation, providing required materials, and managing the logistics to facilitate educators' mobility. Additionally, we will offer financial compensation to volunteer teachers in recognition of their commitment. A structured evaluation system will be implemented, using official English certification to measure the project's success. Furthermore, the curriculum will incorporate a conflict-prevention approach, integrating values of peace and coexistence into the educational process.

During the project's analysis, we identified that, at such a young age, children already recognize the importance of learning a second language, especially in a highly touristic municipality like Villa de Leyva. Likewise, we observed that local school teachers require effective support in terms of human resources and that a continuous project is essential to ensure learning. Our initiative comprehensively addresses these needs. First, we will provide English lessons with native-speaking teachers. Second, we will ensure the presence of a support teacher in each school for this subject. Third, we will guarantee that children receive one English class per day. The objective is to benefit 12 schools and 450 children over five years, allowing them to complete their primary education cycle.

To ensure the project's sustainability in terms of peacebuilding, we will integrate values of peaceful coexistence and conflict resolution within the English curriculum, ensuring that children acquire both linguistic and social skills. Training local teachers in methodologies that promote peace and conflict prevention will be essential to maintaining these values in the long term. Additionally, engaging the community through workshops and activities will strengthen the project's impact on the family environment. A continuous evaluation system will measure progress and adjust strategies based on needs. Encouraging youth leadership in schools will consolidate the project's impact by shaping future change-makers in their communities and ensuring that the acquired knowledge extends beyond the classroom, fostering a sustainable culture of peace.

Community participation is crucial for the project's success and for promoting a culture of peace. It is essential that families and the broader community be deeply involved, supporting the program and ensuring that their children regularly attend English classes and related activities. Community collaboration not only facilitates access to necessary resources and reinforces shared commitment to the values of peace and coexistence, but it also contributes to economic well-being. By supporting the project, the community helps ensure that children acquire language skills that can open future job opportunities, ultimately improving the economic situation of families and the region as a whole. This comprehensive commitment strengthens children's learning, community stability, economic development, and the creation of a peaceful environment.
