Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Kenya

Location: Athi-river

Total Budget: $37,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

1.NEED IDENTIFIED

The school lighting project was conceived as part of the Rotary Club of langata Digital Literacy Project. As part of its implementation, it was realised that there are boarding school that take pupils from the low income area to board in school However due to the high cost of electricity , they cramp in one class that is full fitted with electricity. The path to the dooms are also not properly lit thereby exposing the girls to danger at night while accessing the toilet facilities. In other instances, some schools are not connected to the grid as they are in the remote areas, so the intervention requires the provision of portal solar lamps that allow the pupils to carry the same home to study overnight and carry it back to school the following day for charging. The idea is to create more studying time for learner.

2. HOW PROJECT WILL MEET THE NEEDS

a) The school lighting project will increase the studying time in the boarding schools and thereby improve performance.

b) the Provision of the solar mast and solar panel would not only ensure green energy but also ensure that security is enhances in and around the dormitories and the classrooms

c) the Portable lamps in rural areas where the schools are not connected to the grid will ensure the students are able to study at night in the privacy of the home and under the supervision of their parents .
