Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Kenya

Location: Homabay

Total Budget: $83,133

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

A.SCHOOL NEEDS

The school faces several urgent challenges, which include:

1. Electricity: The school lacks a stable electricity supply, making it difficult to conduct evening classes and integrate technology into the learning process.

2. Administration Offices: There is no dedicated administrative space for the school's leadership and staff, which is crucial for effective management.

3. School Boat: Kiwa Island is only accessible by water, making a reliable school boat essential for transportation of students and staff to and from the mainland.

4. Boys' Dormitory: The current boys' dormitory is makeshift, made from corrugated iron sheets, and needs to be replaced with a permanent structure to ensure the safety and comfort of students.

5. CRE Teacher: The school currently lacks a qualified Christian Religious Education (CRE) teacher, which is essential to foster holistic development in the students.

6. Teacher Housing: The existing teacher accommodation is substandard, consisting of temporary structures made of corrugated iron sheets. Adequate, permanent housing is needed to attract and retain qualified educators.

7. Computer Lab and Computers: The school requires a computer lab with sufficient computers to equip students with essential ICT skills needed in today's digital world.

8. Expansion of Land: The school is in need of additional land to accommodate its growing student population and improve learning facilities. The cost of purchasing additional land is Ksh. 120,000.

B. HOW THE PROJECT WILL MEE THE NEEDS

1. Since the school is on island the provision of solar panels will increase the study time as well as ensure security for the students and staff

2. Purchase of the school boat will ensure a reliable, safe and convenient means to access the school by both the learners and the teachers

3. Provision of a computer lab, will not only ensure the learners access digital contents , but will also ensure that the limited infrastructure is utilized for physical learning as opposed to a storage facility for physical books

4. Acquisition of the land , will guarantee sustainability and ownership of the infrastructure and ensure future expansion of the school
