OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT: To develop leadership skills, teamwork and life tools in 120 young people between 14 and 17 years old, living in high-risk areas of the city of Medellín, in order to strengthen their resilience, promote a culture of peace and provide them with alternatives for personal and community development that will keep them away from recruitment by criminal gangs, thus contributing to their overall well- being and the improvement of the social fabric in their communities.
OUR PROJECT: Over the course of two years, continuous training sessions will be held for a period of 8 to 10 months per group. The project seeks to offer a safe and educational environment where participants can acquire skills that strengthen them in the face of the realities of their environment, particularly the risk of being recruited by criminal gangs. The sessions will include practical leadership workshops, mentoring, and personal development activities, designed to empower young people and provide them with tools that allow them to make positive decisions for their future. This program will not only focus on the individual development of each young person, but also on the creation of support networks and the construction of a sense of community, fostering values such as solidarity, empathy, and social commitment. At the end of each training cycle, closing events will be held where young people will be able to multiply their learning and projects in their communities, promoting a positive and lasting impact on their environment.
IDENTIFIED NEEDS: Young people from low-income backgrounds in Medellín face the constant threat of being recruited by criminal gangs due to the lack of opportunities and the context of violence in their communities. Many of these young people do not have access to programs that allow them to develop leadership skills, teamwork and life skills, limiting their abilityto build a future outside the cycle of violence.
This project will address these needs with a structured training program for 8 to 10 months per group, where young people will learn and practice key life skills. Through educational activities, the project will provide them with tools that will allow them to resist recruitment by criminal gangs and opt for positive alternatives for their personal and community development.
TRAINING OF YOUNG LEADERS: During the program, young people with outstanding leadership skills will be identified and will receive additional training to become facilitators and mentors for future generations of participants. This will allow the project to continue tooperate with an internal structure of trained young people leading activities in their communities.
