Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Cameroon

Location: Kumbo

Total Budget: $132,500

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

The project will be implemented in three communities in Kumbo namely:

Ndzen Nji community with a population of about 4,800 people and a pipeline of 4,2km, New Deal Mongolian street with a population of 2,850 and a pipeline network of 3.2km and lastly Roohgasah Mbve community with a population of 3,350 people and a pipeline network of 5.8km.

The total pipeline is estimated at about 13.2km. these communities lack access to clean water and relay heavily on doubtful sources. They have been trying to solve this numberl problem on their own ways but lack the means to do so. This is the reason why they contacted Kumbo Rotary as they have seen our water projects in the region.

The project will construct catchments and filtration chambers and the filtered water will be taken to the tanks where it will be taken to the communities and stand pipes will be constructed where water will be carried for domestic consumption

The WMCs that will be trained to manage the water systems as well as trained on hygiene and sanitation on behalf of the 3 communities when Rotary hands over the project and not to the government as the government has no direct hand of ownership in the project

Kumbo, located in the north west region of Cameroon, with a population of about 80,000 people, has no secure, sanitary water system currently in place. At the moment, the whole of Kumbo area is solely dependent on polluted water sources due to lack of means, the municipal council is unable to run the old and almost outdated communal water system. People now fetch water from springs which are exposed to pollution by animals and man since the same running waters are used for washing clothes and bathing and at the same time for drinking.

The main objective of this project is to provide regular potable water supply all year round, as well as train the water management and caretaker committees to effectively manage the project aiming at reducing water related diseases in three main localities.

The long term objective is to supply the community with their own water systems, managed and operated by the community

Other objectives include:

To eradicate the prevalence of water-borne diseases in the community to acceptable level of about 98% Reduce the distance covered by trekking down and uphill to collect drinking water Provide training to 30 community members to help ensure sustainable management.

Ensure effective school attendance and performance as time spent to fetch water will be reduced for children
