Project Description

Region: Central America

Country: Guatemala

Location: Santiago Atitlan

Total Budget: $130,926

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

This project seeks to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes for Tz'utujil Maya women in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala, by enhancing local healthcare infrastructure and expanding community-based prenatal support. Our primary objectives are to ensure safer pregnancies, provide comprehensive prenatal and neonatal

care, and equip trusted local health workers, known as Promotoras, to promote health education within their communities.

The project will directly benefit over 500 pregnant women annually, offering them essential prenatal care, early risk assessments, and resources to manage potential pregnancy complications. Key to achieving this is a significant upgrade to Hospitalito Atitlán's medical equipment, including new ultrasound machines, neonatal

warming and resuscitation tables, and advanced laboratory tools. With these additions, the hospital can perform crucial prenatal screenings locally, reducing the need for distant travel to government hospitals and enabling early interventions for high-risk pregnancies.

A critical part of the project involves training and equipping 16 Community Health Promoters, or Promotoras, who speak the local Tz'utujil language and are well respected within their communities. These women are trusted neighbors who actively encourage pregnant women to seek care at the four rural prenatal clinics. They

visit homes, share culturally relevant prenatal health information, and support families in developing personalized emergency birth plans. By connecting women to local resources and helping them navigate healthcare options, the Promotoras play a vital role in bridging traditional practices with modern healthcare services, ensuring timely access to prenatal care and enhancing community trust in medical interventions.

The budget provides $107,204 for new neo-natal equipment, $$7597 for training of staff and outreach workers. Including management, the total grant size is $130,925

We expect to start project implementation in January of 2025 and conclude later in the year.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
