Koch Koo primary school is a government aided school located in Omoro district near Gulu City. As per Uganda National school electronic school registry, Omoro district has 101 primary schools. Koch Koo is a rural community where subsistence farming is the main economic activity. In March 2023, Koch Koo Primary School had a population of 693 pupils, of whom 325 were girls. The enrolment trends for the pupils between the different classes, however, shows a disturbing trend with P.7 class having 39 pupils as compared to 142 pupils in P.1. The dropout rate for the girls is even more alarming and in 2019, of the 33 female pupils who were enrolled in P4, only 6 pupils went on to complete P7. Without completing P7, students will not be able to progress to secondary school.
A recent community needs assessment carried out by the club and other stakeholders identified the lack of adequate latrines and hygiene facilities for girls as a key barrier - girls who begin menstruation feel forced to stay home due to inadequate sanitary facilities at school. The school has only one functioning toilet block in a dilapidated state and yet it is shared between the pupils and the teachers' families who reside on the school premises. The classrooms are also run down, with most of the furniture broken and insufficient, and some classroom structures are incomplete. The temporary boarding facilities are also in a sorry state and lack beds and lighting. The school does not have a water source on the premises, which poses a sanitation challenge.
This project seeks to improve sanitary facilities and the classrooms and provide an on-premises source of clean water.
This will be achieved through construction of drainable latrines seven (7) stances for girls and four (4) stances for the boys) inclusive of hand washing facilities. We shall renovate 2 classroom blocks and provide a water harvesting system with two 10,000 litre tanks.
Upon completion of the project, we expect that the enrolment of the school will increase. Improvements to classrooms and toilets will support a reduction in overall attrition but especially among the girls who will now have adequate sanitary facilities, thus reducing the gender disparity. It will also encourage learning and literacy.
Given that the project is over 205 miles away, a project manager will be appointed to ensure that the project implementation will be properly managed and tracked.
