Villages in Zimbabwe do not have access to clean and sustainable water sources, and due to its sub-Saharan climate, it is difficult to grow crops. This project will fund 5 solar powered water wells which will not only provide safe drinking water for villagers, but also water for a drip irrigation system, enabling the village to produce crops for food and additional income. The project will also include agricultural training for a member of the village to insure that proper agricultural practices are followed. As soon as grant funds are available, the specific villages will be selected and implementation will commence.
HEB Rotarian Gary Short met with the staff of Intuba (the organization implementing the water wells) and visited an existing water well in Zimbabwe in April of 2024. While there, he also met with the 2023-2024 President and 2024-2025 President of the Rotary Club of Bulawayo who agreed to be an International Partner, as well as the Assistant District Governor for that club. Rotarian Short personally knows the President and Treasurer of Intuba, both of whom grew up in Zimbabwe and now reside in Texas.
