The Need:
Rotary is dedicated to improving lives and creating a better world by bringing hope to those who face difficult challenges. There are 40,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in South Sudan who need help to improve their lives after floods destroyed their homes and livelihoods. The Rotary Club of Downtown Gainesville's in partnership with The Rotary Club of Juba Airport, South Sudan. This Global Grant seeks to provide that help to the IDPs and over 150,000 members of the host community in South Sudan.
This project is designed with three key objectives:
Objective #1: Implement the installation of a water well with a submersible pump to enhance WASH for both people and agricultural purposes,
Objective #2: Establish a greenhouse for year-round cultivation, and
Objective #3: Institute a fish farming initiative to enhance the nutritional well-being of both Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and the host communities residing in Mangalla.
Beneficiaries:
- Target Population: This project will benefit the residents of Mangalla, Central Equatoria, Juba County, South Sudan including 40,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), and over 150,000 members of the host community, a primary school, and a healthcare facility.
- Estimated Reach: Approximately 190,000 people will gain access to improved water and agricultural services positively impacting their daily lives.
Community Needs:
1. Water:
Water scarcity, accessibility, and quality. The project will target these necessities by building and maintaining a water well with the community.
2. Health and Well-being:
Inadequate sanitation leads to water-borne illnesses. The installation of a water well will improve sanitation behaviors, for sustainable farming practices, and ensure access to nutritious food contributing; therefore, to the well-being of Mangalla's residents.
3. Food Security:
The establishment of a greenhouse for year-round cultivation, and a fish farm will address the community's agricultural needs, promote sustainable farming practices, and ensure access to nutritious food.
4. Education and Empowerment:
The project plan includes training activities to increase beneficiaries' capacity so that they can contribute to the project's successful implementation and management.
5. Economic Development:
The projected greenhouse for year-round cultivation, and the fish farming will create viable opportunities for economic development. These efforts will support local businesses, provide vocational training, and foster entrepreneurship.
Project Activities:
- Installation of a water well, greenhouse and fish farms.
- Training of local personnel for installation, operation, and maintenance of the greenhouse and fish farming facility.
Involvement of club members:
The staff at the Southern Sudan Healthcare Organization will collaborate with the Rotary Club of Juba Airport and the Downtown Rotary Club of Gainesville to execute and implement this grant. The community who serves as host are involved with this project as they have on past Rotary projects. A Rotarian expert from the Center for Sustainable Agricultural Excellence and Conservation (CSAEC) will establish the greenhouse and fish farming facility. CSAEC will provide the training for the community in operating the greenhouse and fish farming.
This project aligns with Rotary International's goals for water, sanitation, and hygiene by ensuring the provision of safe drinking water, promoting better hygiene practices, providing for the nutritional needs of the community and improving the overall health of the community. By working closely with the local Rotary club, SSHCO, the community and leaders, the project aims to create a sustainable and lasting impact on the well-being of the local community.
