Project Description

Region: Middle East

Country: Lebanon

Location: Beirut

Total Budget: $45,525

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

Project Description:

Needs Identified:

Children undergoing treatment for severe burns, oncology, and intensive care face significant pain and anxiety due to their medical conditions and the procedures involved in their care. Traditional pain management techniques often fall short in addressing the high levels of distress experienced by these young patients. The Lebanese Hospital Geitaoui - University Medical Center, with its specialized Burn Center, pediatric ward, oncology beds, and ICU beds, serves a critical role in treating these vulnerable patients.

Project Objective:

The Virtual Reality Pediatric Care project aims to implement VR technology to improve pain management and reduce anxiety for pediatric patients at the Lebanese Hospital Geitaoui - University Medical Center. This includes patients in the burn center, oncology ward, and intensive care unit.

Implementation Plan:

1. Community Assessment:

- Conduct comprehensive assessments involving hospital administrators, medical staff, and patient families to identify specific needs and potential VR applications.

- Gather baseline data to measure the impact of VR interventions on pain and anxiety levels.

2. VR Equipment Procurement:

- Purchase and set up VR headsets and related equipment tailored for medical use, ensuring compatibility with hospital infrastructure and patient safety standards.

3. Training and Deployment:

- Train medical staff on the effective use of VR technology for pain management.

- Develop protocols for incorporating VR into regular treatment procedures.

4. Patient Care:

- Integrate VR sessions into treatment plans for burn, oncology, and ICU patients.

- Use VR to provide immersive, distraction-based pain relief during painful procedures and recovery periods.

Impact:

- Reduced Pain and Anxiety:

- Clinical studies indicate significant reductions in perceived pain and anxiety levels among patients using VR technology.

- Improved Patient Experience: Enhance the overall hospital experience for young patients, making treatment periods more bearable and less traumatic.

- Positive Feedback from Medical Staff:Anticipated positive reception from healthcare providers, facilitating better patient care and staff morale.

Sustainability Plan:

- Train local medical staff to ensure ongoing expertise in using and maintaining VR equipment.

- Develop partnerships with local technology providers to secure long-term support and updates for VR equipment.

- Engage community stakeholders, including patient families, in the project to build local ownership and support for sustained use of VR technology.

Monitoring and Evaluation:

- Establish a monitoring and evaluation plan to track the project's progress and measure its impact on pain and anxiety levels.

- Collect data on patient outcomes, staff feedback, and overall usage of VR technology.

- Use the evaluation results to make necessary adjustments and improvements to the project.

Club Involvement:

- Club members will assist with the procurement and setup of equipment, organize training sessions for hospital staff, monitor and evaluate the project's progress, and engage in fundraising activities to secure additional resources if needed.

This project not only aims to alleviate pain for pediatric patients but also positions the Rotary Club Metn Gate and its partners as pioneers in adopting innovative healthcare solutions. By collaborating with local and international Rotary clubs, we hope to expand the reach and effectiveness of this initiative.
