Project Description

Region: Central America

Country: Mexico

Location: Baja norte & sud

Total Budget: $61,872

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

Goal: To eliminate cervical cancer in Baja, Mexico. This grant brings the DNA testing recommended by WHO in its global initiative to eliminate cervical cancer by 2080, as well as the highly effective treatment tool, thermocoagulator, to prevent cervical cancer from forming especially at its earliest stages, an economically wise approach.

Objective: To upgrade Baja medical professional capability to prevent cervical cancer by providing inexpensive DNA PCR testing for HPV with the culturally appropriate benefits of self-swabbing and 40-second treatment for positive cases that doesn't hurt but lasts 5 years.

Brief description of the project: A more rural and remote peninsula in Mexico, Baja is underserved in health care diagnosis and treatment. Like other LMIC (lower and middle income countries/regions) Baja, Mexico has a high rate of incidence and death from cervical cancer. Yet, cervical cancer is the most preventable cancer, provided availability of adequate screening for HPV infection and early treatment to arrest the virus that causes it.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
