History Logs

Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Perú

Location: Chachapoyas

Total Budget: $70,000

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

The population of the Santa Rosa de Pedro Castro Human Settlement in the city of Chachapoyas is currently facing a serious problem related to water contamination. This community, made up of approximately 2,000 inhabitants, depends heavily on water sources that are highly contaminated wells, including heavy metals, according to studies conducted by the Universidad Nacional Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza. In these wells, water is captured and then distributed to homes through 1 or 2-inch hoses for consumption without any prior treatment. People use this water for household cleaning, cooking and personal hygiene.

As a result of this water contamination, local residents face serious health problems, which negatively affects people's quality of life, limits their development opportunities and perpetuates a cycle of poverty.

This issue highlights the urgent need to comprehensively address the problem of water contamination in the Santa Rosa de Pedro Castro Human Settlement in the city of Chachapoyas, implementing effective measures to ensure access to clean and safe water. It also highlights the importance of promoting education and awareness of proper water management practices. Therefore, the overall objective of this project is to improve the quality of life and health of the population affected by the consumption of contaminated water, through the implementation of effective measures for water treatment and safe water supply, as well as awareness and education on proper hygiene and water management practices.
