Drinking contaminated water contributes to hospital cases and death in Zambia. Most families do not have running water or taps in their homes; the families draw water from shallow wells or communal taps which are not safe. The Ministry of Health declared that Lusaka underground water is contaminated and therefore unsafe to drink. Over 60% of households have chronic diarrheal diseases if the water is not chlorinated or boiled before consumption. The population is well informed about the issue of water-borne disease and motivated to take steps to improve their own health through water filtration.
This project will provide a sustainable water solution to families in the sprawling Matero township. The Safe Water Filtration Systems (SWFS) are comprised of a 0.1 micron membrane filter, water buckets and stands. Families will be trained on use and maintenance of the SWFS prior to deployment. Use and performance will be monitored regularly with in-person visits. A pilot Project was successfully completed last year where 60 SWFS were distributed.
Your project is "Fully Pledged". This means the amount of the pledges is equal to the total budget of the project. Now the project needs to be finalized and go through the approval process with The Rotary Foundation. This process gets started on the administration page.
Project listed for the 2024-25 Rotary Year.
The TRF Grant application number is #245936.

DDF contributions in grey are pending approval of the corresponding district committee.
Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
