Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: India

Location: Ambadi, Maharashtra

Total Budget: $162,896

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Needs assessment:

Ambadi is a remote village in rural areas in the state of Maharashtra. The population are mainly dependent on agriculture. The only water source for the people is rain water received during July till mid-September. The water is received through the overflow of Tansa river. Few people are also earning the livelihood through catching river fishes. The agricultural produce is sufficient for daily survival and only small produce is available for selling in the market. The water levels shrink post monsoon season and the reservoir completely dries up from April onwards.

The farmers are able to take only one crop during monsoon and for rest of the period, they are surviving on local work or migrating to nearby cities for work. The situation is resulting in migrating more youth to cities.

The project:

The project entails construction of a concrete dam which will obstruct the water and will create a water reservoir of a stretch of approximately 1 Sq Km. This water will be used post monsoon season for taking 2nd crop and increase in the earnings of farmers on a perpetual basis. The fishing activity will also continue for longer duration. The water reservoir will also result in increasing the ground water table as accumulated water will be absorbed in the soil. This ground water can be subsequently drawn using bore well. The size of the dam is approximately 70 meters long and 1.5 meters in height. The project will benefit approximately 12500 villagers on a sustainable basis.

Permissions and estimates:

We have obtained the requisite permissions and 'No Objection Certificate'from Government authorities and local administrative authorities. The technical measurements are prepared basis survey of the site from local administration. The cost estimates are prepared by an approved certified civil engineer, having experience in public works.

Funds Usage:

The funds will be used towards construction of dam, payment of consultant fees, expenses towards monitoring the construction till completion, fixing of Rotary Plaque.

The construction work can be done within 3 months after receiving the funds. The construction needs to be done in the summer season only, when the water is dried up.
