PROJECT OBJECTIVES:
Provide two incubators and two breathing ventilation fans to the neonatal ICU of the San Pedro Foundation.
Improve the survival of premature and low birth weight newborns whose mothers seek consultation at the San Pedro Foundation.
Train families of newborns in the 'Kangaroo Care' method to reduce prolonged hospital stays that expose them to healthcare-associated infections."
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The San Pedro Hospital Foundation is an institution located in the city of Pasto since 1886, which, over the years, has been responsible for providing healthcare to all populations. Although this hospital caters to all specialties, it is preferred by mothers not only from the department of Nariño but also by the nearby municipalities of Cauca and Putumayo, enjoying great prestige for its quality and humanized care. Approximately 180 births are attended per month.
For the past year, it has had a high obstetric dependency unit, which has increased not only the number but also the complexity of the mothers who arrive at this institution, and therefore the complexity of the newborns who are born here too, for this reason, the neonatal unit, where babies up to 25 weeks of gestational age and weights of up to 500 grams are received, has also expanded. This expansion increases the need for critical care attention, making it essential to increase the number of incubators and breathing ventilation fans to provide greater coverage and care to this tiny and vulnerable population.
IDENTIFIED NEEDS AND HOW WILL THIS PROJECT MEET THEM:
The Rotary Club of Pasto Valle de Atriz has health professionals among its Rotary associates who are part of the hospital's medical group. They have identified a critical need for the vital health of the neonatal population in the department of Nariño and its surroundings.
The majority of mothers receiving care at this hospital come from a low socioeconomic background, facing numerous risk factors for premature births. These newborns have the greatest need for care in critical care units. Therefore, the existing incubators and ventilators in the neonatal intensive care unit at the San Pedro Hospital Foundation are insufficient to meet the pressing needs. This realization led to the inception of this project.

IMPORTANT DATA:
- For 60 newborns who need an intensive care unit per month, 20-30% require mechanical ventilation
- The average of births per month in San Pedro Hospital Foundation is 180, and 10% are premature and/or low-weight
SUSTAINABILITY:
Sustainability will be guaranteed through the San Pedro Hospital Foundation, the entity responsible for ensuring the maintenance and proper use of the equipment through continuous training of health personnel in various areas. This effort is in collaboration with the Rotary Club, as the institution's full-time medical staff are members of the club. The project is designed as part of a strategic health plan spanning five years.
COMMUNITY ROL:
For several years, the need to provide equipment for the newborn unit has been a priority, but it has not been possible due to the San Pedro Hospital Foundation's lack of contributions from the state. Additionally, the foundation has to attend to multiple needs. This is why the Pasto Valle de Atriz Club wanted to formulate this project for the acquisition of incubators and ventilators for the neonatal ICU.
