Region: Asia

Country: Nepal

Location: Kathmandu

Total Budget: $2,678,260

Area of Focus: Maternal and child health

Project Description:

Needs Identification:

The "Hamro Bahini" project has been launched to address a pressing need for comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and awareness among adolescent girls aged 10-19 in Nepal. This need has been identified based on several critical factors:

Lack of Access to SRHR Education: A significant portion of adolescent girls in Nepal lacks access to accurate and relevant SRHR information, leaving them vulnerable to health risks and misinformation.

Cultural and Social Stigmas: Deep-seated cultural norms and taboos surrounding sexual and reproductive health topics often hinder open discussions and the access to necessary information.

Empowerment Gap: Adolescent girls frequently lack the empowerment to make informed decisions about their own sexual and reproductive health, leading to adverse consequences.

Lack of Educational Resources: There is a scarcity of localized and culturally contextualized SRHR educational materials and resources for both students and their families.

Project Objectives:

The project is designed to meet these identified needs through a set of specific objectives:

Develop a comprehensive and culturally relevant SRHR curriculum tailored for adolescent girls in government schools in Nepal.

Train a cadre of SRHR champions, primarily comprised of medical college students and youth, to provide education and awareness to adolescent girls.

Create realistic case studies focusing on key SRHR themes and seamlessly integrate them into the curriculum.

Distribute handbooks to teachers, students, and parents to foster awareness and education on the sexual and reproductive health of adolescent girls.

The project will be executed in three phases:

Initial Phase:

Selection of SRHR Champions

Piloting of Case Study

Execution Phase:

Training for SRHR Champions

Training on SRHR theme-based case study by SRHR Champions at Schools

How Club Members Will Be Involved:

Club members will play pivotal roles across various project aspects:

Participating as SRHR Champions: Club members will assume the role of SRHR champions and actively engage in delivering SRHR education to adolescent girls in government schools.

Data Collection: They will assist in collecting data for case studies, which will enrich the curriculum and awareness materials.

Supporting Post-Summit Activities: Club members will contribute to the monitoring and evaluation process, aid in the publication and distribution of handbooks, and participate in case study development.

Fundraising and Sponsorship: Club members will play an active role in seeking financial support from sponsors and partners to ensure the project's successful implementation.

Major Beneficiaries:

The "Hamro Bahini" project will bring significant benefits to a broad spectrum of beneficiaries, including students from nine Medical Colleges Rotaract Clubs, and Interact District adolescents. These individuals will be at the forefront of receiving SRHR education and awareness, ultimately leading to informed decisions, improved health outcomes, and a reduction in SRHR-related challenges in Nepal.
