Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Brazil

Location: Toledo - Parana

Total Budget: $59,640

Area of Focus: Maternal and child health

The project involves the acquisition of a Neonatal Ventilation and Respiratory Monitoring

Equipment - Dräger Babylog® VN600 for the Beneficent Association of Health in Western Paraná

- HOESP - Neonatal ICU. To achieve this, the technical team (comprising doctors, nurses, and

physiotherapists) at HOESP - Neonatal ICU has collaborated to define the technical specifications of the equipment and the necessary utilities for its installation and operation. The project alsoincludes training for the entire team that will use the equipment. According to the WHO, babies born before 28 weeks are considered extremely premature.

These babies have extremely low birth weights and typically require longer hospitalizations and

continuous care. Caring for these vulnerable patients is a significant responsibility that demands tools, equipment, and support to ensure positive outcomes.

According to WHO estimates released earlier this year, the number of maternal and

newborn deaths has not significantly decreased since 2015, totaling 4.5 million occurrences

annually. Data from the 20th Regional Health Department were gathered, which indicated that in 2022, 2002 babies were born with a mortality rate of 10.98%. The HOESP Neonatal ICU has anaverage of 170 admissions per year, confirming these statistics, with 163 admissions in 2022 anda mortality rate of 9.7%. The project will benefit a large community since HOESP is one of the reference hospitals in the 20th Regional Health Department, serving approximately 420,000 inhabitants. In 2022, the 20th Regional Health Department recorded 2002 births, while the Neonatal ICU at HOESP had 163 admissions in the same year. According to data from the State Health Department of Paraná, 1 in 10 newborns requires ventilation to initiate or maintain respiratory movements. Therefore, the project will primarily benefit extremely premature babies who require ventilation and intensive neonatal care, improving their chances of survival and health.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
