Project Description

Region: Central America

Country: Costa Rica

Location: Costa Rica

Total Budget: $40,000

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health, Community economic development

Increase access to breast cancer early screenings using a mobile unit. This unit allows mammography scans to be brought closer to women to promote self-care and the importance of regular health check-ups in the community itself, which avoids trips to health centers. Project plans to perform 500 - 600 mammograms in the outskirts of the metropolitan area, North, central and the Atlantic region of Costa Rica. Project touches on Maternal Health in addition to Community Development- death of a parent affects children and the community in an indirect manner. The mobile unit will travel to remote villages to reach women that are low income and do not have the financial possibilities of traveling to medical centers to obtain mammogram screenings. A follow up program is established by the mobile unit to refer women to that have a positive screening. The unit allows for women in wheelchairs or with physical disabilities to be examined without an impediment.

DDF contributions in grey are pending approval of the corresponding district committee.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
