Project Description

Region: South-East Asia

Country: Nepal

Location: Damgade

Total Budget: $108,000

Area of Focus: The environment

The Bio Gas project will provide alternate cooking fuel to about 150 households having 800 people from ward no 8 of Thaha Municipality. The communities include Bhakunde, Moriya, Kabhre, Devisthan, Agara, Damgade and Chhap. The residents are mainly from the indigenous ethnic Tamang community. The families in the village make their living through livestock rearing and subsistence farming. Life is not easy for the people and a major factor is the lack of adequate clean water and proper cooking fuel for their daily needs. The villagers mainly rely on wood fire collected from the jungle nearby. Finding wood for cooking is hard and at the same time the smoke from the wood fire causes many health complications.

The Rotary Club of Kathmandu Metro, Cooperating Organization CHOICE-Nepal and the local government will work together, along with the villagers. CHOICE-Nepal provides engineers, technicians and supervisors who will help organize, train and implement the project.

Un-skilled labor is provided by the local people. Rotary Club Kathmandu Metro with CHOICE will establish baseline information before and during the project implementation. This will be used in making decisions about the project planning, implementation and impact measurement.

As Locals are the indispensable of the project, during project implementation they will be provided necessary knowledge and skills on project management. A democratic system which allows people to elect their leaders and set up sustainable project operation mechanisms will be set up. Three of the locals will be trained in maintenance of biogas digesters. They will later be hired by the community when needed.

Every family will have one Bio Gas digester, which provide them with alternative cooking.

The objectives of the project are:

• Reduce carbon emission by replacing firewood by providing methane gas

• Provide free cooking fuel for the people in rural villages

• Improve health, hygiene and sanitation of the household

• Promote organic vegetable production by providing organic manure

• Reduce drudgery especially of village women and girls.
