Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Nigeria

Location: Ibadan

Total Budget: $56,386

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

The objective of this project is to increase the capacity of behavioral health care for the pediatric population of Ibadan, Nigeria.

As an outcome, 3,600 youth will receive timely diagnosis and treatment for mild or moderate symptoms of anxiety, depression or ADHD that would typically go untreated. Even in the USA, half of youth with these symptoms wait an average of 10 years for treatment; the other half never get treated.

Boston Children's Hospital is making training online available for pediatricians, family doctors and their professional staff. The training has already been successfully piloted in 4 districts in the USA, with Rotary club assistance.

The main elements of the project will be:

1) Rotarians will assist with the enrolling of 15 family doctors to participate in the online training and live workshops

2) Rotarians will provide these family doctors with bound materials on the course and ongoing support materials

3) Rotarians will provide screening instrument documents to the doctors

4) A child and adolescent psychiatrist will a) assist in the recruitment of the family doctors; b) provide the telephone consults to the family doctors in year 1; c) facilitate project monitoring and outcomes reporting; d) enlist funding sources to provide phone consult services for year 2 onward

5) In year 2 Rotarians will engage with outcomes reporting and encourage additional family doctors to independently complete the training through streaming on demand. It is expected that at least another 15 doctors will participate.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
