The full project title is "Mariannridge High School Mathematics Tutoring and Enrichment Project." The lack of quality mathematics instruction in disadvantaged communities in South Africa is a major impediment to the future success of high-school graduates. This project delivers mathematics instruction by bringing upper division and postgraduate tutors from the University of KwaZulu-Natal each Saturday to Mariannridge, a township community located 20 km from central Durban. This year the project serves learners in grades 8 and 9. We intend to add a new grade each year, eventually serving grades 8 - 12 and also including a computing component. Pass rates and leaving exam scores have greatly improved as the result of a pilot version of this project. Our ambition is to expand and improve this project, The global grant will cover transportation, modest tutor stipends, and pedagogical materials. This first phase covers July 2022 - July 2023. The Rotary project seeks to expand to all grades by 2025. At this point the project once proven will become self-sustaining through South African corporate sponsors, in part incentivized through Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment credits. One such sponsor has already been recruited.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
