Area of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention
As a result of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine and the Russian Federation's use of various weapons systems, large areas of territories of Ukraine have been contaminated with ammunition and other explosive devices, and this is a colossal challenge that must be addressed immediately.
According to preliminary estimates, the total area of Ukraine where it is necessary to take measures to identify areas contaminated with explosives, conduct non-technical and technical inspections and further humanitarian demining potentially is about 300 thousand square kilometers, of which approximately 19 thousand square kilometers is river water and reservoirs of Ukraine, as well as the Azov and Black Seas and this is almost half of the entire territory of Ukraine.
Given the probable areas of contamination with explosives, these military actions can be considered one of the worst since World War II. No country in the world that has suffered as a result of wars or armed conflicts has an analog of the scale of mine and ammunition pollution.
