Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Uganda

Location: Kampala

Total Budget: $48,750

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

The Union Vision Schools is a group of 12 schools established in low-income communities to give them quality education. These communities mainly earn from subsistence farming and petty trading, which is inadequate to meet their daily needs, let alone educate children. For this reason, education in these communities has taken back stage and the schools struggle to meet their important requirements. Moreover, the communities regard the Vision Schools as a donation from the missionaries and do not expect to pay for their children's school fees.

The main objectives of the project are:

1) To equip the school libraries with textbooks and Readers to enhance learning and make the children of these communities competitive in the job market.

2) To equip the school science laboratories with apparatus that would make practical subjects more simplified, easier to understand, and ultimately improve students' performance.

3) Provide computers that would aid the students, teachers, and administrators in understanding and using ICT in classroom instruction and administrative duties.

4) Skill teachers and administrators in ICT, library management, and effective administrative strategies that would instill life-long practices, and ultimately improve service delivery in the schools and beyond.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
