Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: South Africa

Location: Cape Town

Total Budget: $37,260

Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

ILoveCoffee currently train kitchen staff and baristas in their own kitchen. 80% of their staff are from the Deaf Community. If they had a training kitchen they could train up to 100 members of the Deaf Community a year to be placed into industry. This would include teaching the new employers to communicate with the deaf staff they take on. The communication barrier is one of the biggest factors why the deaf community are not currently employed. The other factor is the low education standards during schooling. ILoveCoffee have managed to clinch the national Barista title twice in the last three years. Due to this they are being approached by major international hotel chains to train baristas for them. They are also being noticed by the major food chain stores and there are currently negotiations to supply their food items to the food chain stores. There is a desperate need to train up more of the deaf community to be in a position to take up formal employment.

DDF contributions in grey are pending approval of the corresponding district committee.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
