Lake Wamala, The increased human encroachment on wetlands and forests limits the existence of a number of animal and bird species that find habitat in the destroyed forest covers and wetlands. Wetlands act as natural filters, water stores and are important for Bio productivity. Therefore, their increased destruction limits their importance which is very relevant to human existence and this increases chances for desertification making human life a difficulty.
one of the fresh water bodies in central Uganda, originally covering 250 square kilometers, has since been reduced by 80 kilometers due to human activity. This has resulted into high prevalence of waterborne diseases in the fishing villages along Lake Wamala. During the needs assessment which covered eleven villages:Lubajja A, Lubajja B, Lusaalira, Bukanaga, Butebi, Kannamba, Buzibazi, Nkonya,Gombe, Kalyankonko and Nyanzi,it was discovered that the highest percentage of access to safe drinking water in these village is a paltry 38% in Kannamba and the lowest being 27% in Lusaalira. The study also revealed that toilet coverage in the fishing villages stands at 29% which greatly compromises the hygiene of virtually every aspect of life.
This proposed intervention intends to increase access to safe and clean water, sanitation and hygiene to 50% for improved health. Through environmental education,trainings and indigenous tree planting, 32%the Lake Wamala buffer ecological zone will be restored. This will help to counteract the increasing levels of deforestation in Lake Wamala catchment area.
Construction of the 8 (eight) Ecosan toilets,and the distribution and installation of the two hundred units of the BioSand water filtration technologies is expected to reduce the incidence of waterborne-diseases and improve the health of people along the Lake Wamala fishing villages by approximately 25%
Project Purpose, Objective and Expected Results
The proposed project aims at addressing the sanitation and hygiene challenges with environmental conservation through sustainable land use practices in wetlands and forests in the fishing villages of Lubajja A, Lubajja B, Lusaalira, Bukanaga, Butebi, Kannamba, Buzibazi, Nkonya,GombeKalyankonko and Nyanzi located along lake wamala.
The proposed project will have the following objectives
1. To improve accessibility to safe and clean water for mainly people living in fishing villages along lake Wamala and near wetlands this will be done through the provision of the echo-friendly Bio Sand Water filters by 2022,
2. To increase the total forest cover of the area surrounding Lake Wamala for integrated water resource management and restore the lake wamala buffer zone by 2022
3. Increased awareness of proper and sustainable management of natural
Resources and proper fish handling at landing sites by 2022.
