Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Brazil

Location: Mauriti/CE

Total Budget: $70,000

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

74 million people in Brazil will suffer from water insecurity by 2035 and the northeast is the most threatened region. We are partnering with the specialized NGO "Amigos do Bem", who will be drilling of 01 well + water testing and maintenance for 12 months, the technical team assesses communities with the greatest water insecurity and vulnerability, communities are trained to use water sustainably.

*Community assessment: How the project team learned about the community's needs*

Lack of water in the hinterland; No rain and utilities: 40% of the rural population of Ceará, Pernambuco and Alagoas does not have access to the water supply network; The solution: sustainable use of underground resources; 5.1 million homes use deep wells as their primary source of water, according to IBGE; Groundwater use needs to grow 54% by 2050, according to BPBES;

*Project impact: How the project will help the community after the project ends*

Around 250 people will receive direct access to clean drinking water from a source close to their home; There will be water available for cooking, personal hygiene and subsistence farming; Gastrointestinal and other water-related illnesses will decrease in the community; Children will have better health and more time available to study as fetching water will not take many hours; Women and girls, who are primarily responsible for fetching water, will have more time to work and study, respectively, bringing them closer to gender equality.

*Sustainability: How the benefits of the project will continue afterward*

According to estimates by the Brazilian Biodiversity Platform, for every BRL 1,00 invested in water security infrastructure, BRL 15 return in benefits related to economic activities in Brazil; Sustainability and economy in the operation of artesian wells: Installation of a solution for operating the well with 100% renewable, more economical and sustainable solar energy; Solution includes the equipment necessary to generate enough energy for the operation of a specific pump, whose power varies according to the well flow, to be measured after drilling; Positive impact of 0.91 tCO2e, which is equivalent to restoring 23.27 m2 of forest, or the same as planting 4 trees/month.
