Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: Nepal

Location: Naya Basti Area

Total Budget: $48,975

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Community economic development

Fighting Disease in Naya Basti Area in Nepal:

Purpose: Helping an impoverished people improve and sustain their quality of life by providing training and necessary materials for health awareness, sickness prevention, and better nutrition.

The Naya Basti area is part of the poorest and impoverished villages which lie in the western part of Manahari District. Most of the villagers who live in this village are from the poor Chepang and Danuwar tribe of the Dalits community, an oppressed people. Farming and labor are their primary support. They grow rice, maize, wheat and some vegetables but not enough for their needs. They receive little or no assistance from the government.

Due to a lack of education and training, these villagers continue to live as their families have lived in the past. Health is poor, nutrition is poor, water wells are limited. Health care and wellness training is not available locally.

Global Hope Network (GHNI) Nepali staff and Kapan Rotary Club in Kathmandu will work with village leaders and families to provide training and assistance for the estimated 1,400 families located in a 50 kilometer area to:

1-Improve health conditions with training about Covid-19 and other diseases and proper

treatments. Masks, disinfectant, and soap will be distributed, classes will be taught

on hygiene and wellness.

2-Goats and chickens will be provided on a loan program to improve diets. As goats

provide kids and chickens provide baby chicks, the first of each will be returned to

GHNI to be loaned to another family, and so on. Classes will be taught on care of the

animals. The animals will also provide a source of income to the families with milk,

cheese, and eggs to sell or trade.

3-Seeds will be distributed for growing a better variety and more nutritional food.

Classes on diet and nutrition will be taught.

4-Additional wells will be added throughout the area to reduce travel by families to get

water. The goal would be to add 85 wells the first year.

GHNI staff will be working with the villagers on a weekly basis and the GHNI Nepal Director and Kapan Rotary Club volunteers will be visiting periodically to monitor the progress and assist with projects as needed.

GHNI has been working for 20+ years with impoverished villages in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East to help villages come out of poverty and become self-sustaining. See ghni.org for more information about Transformational Community Development.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
