General Objective
Provide the Olavarría Hospital with Equipment for the Detection and Treatment of Colon and Rectal Cancer (CRC).
Specific Objectives
The natural history of CRC makes it one of the most preventable tumors. The natural history of the disease includes a precursor lesion (a slow-growing adenomatous polyp), whose detection and rapid resection dramatically reduced the incidence and progression to CRC. In addition, the slow progression from adenoma to cancer favors screening strategies and allows early diagnosis and more effective treatment.
The risk of suffering a CRC throughout life is between 3 to 5% and 90% of cases occur in people older than 50 years. More than 95% of CRC are adenocarcinomas and 80-90% are preceded by preneoplastic lesions (adenomatous polyps or adenomas). Early diagnosis allow an overall survival ≥90%, but only occurs in 37% of cases.
The objective of the CRC screening is to reduce the burden of this disease performing an early diagnosis, allowing an effective treatment and therefore reduce mortality rates.
The colonoscopy is considered the gold standard for CRC screening by The American College of Gastroenterology.
Needs Assessment
This modern X-ray equipment would complement and / or replace the existing one and the C-arm would be In our city, the estimated people at risk represents 25% of total population (approximately 30,000 persons), plus 30,000 people from surrounding cities. This makes necessary the accessibility to 6,000 colonoscopies procedures per year.
Currently, around one thousand digestive endoscopic studies are annually performed in our institution. This low number of procedures became imperative to increase the availability of this technology, to address the needs of the population.
Brief Description of the Project:
The colonoscopy is considered the gold standard for CRC screening by The American College of Gastroenterology. It allows direct visualization of the entire colonic mucosa looking for adenomas or CRC in early stages, adding the possibility of biopsies and resecting of suspicious lesions during the same procedure. The Argentine Ministry of Health recommends to perform colonoscopy every 10 years to all people older than 50 years of age, or at shorter intervals or younger age in special situacion (e.g. family history or risk factors). This recommendation makes it necessary to increased our technological equipment availability in order to guarantee accessibility and quality to population.
the gastroenterological wing will include an exclusive operating room, in addition to patients waiting-room, observation and recovery area. This will multiply the endoscopic availability, to meet population demand.
An adequate technological equipment is a fundamental part of this project, to guarantee the safety of the patients and the reliability of the procedures.
The necessary equipment includes:
• High resolution video endoscopic tower, estimated cost USD 91,500
• Endoscopic processor, estimated cost USD 16,850
Number of Beneficiaries: the 150,000 inhabitants of the Olavarría zone.
